TQ: On the reunion tour you played a new song called 'Time Wave'. What happened to that one?

JC: We recorded it, but it's one of the tracks you haven't heard. They're great. We'll bring them out in different editions. There's one called 'I Am War', one called 'A Sick Sun (* A Sixth Sun)'. There's also 'Time Wave', 'Feast of Fools', there's 'Suicide Tribe' which everyone loves except Geordie, but he's putting a new guitar on it - there's more than that! (laughs) The first album, there was only about thirty minutes. We've just done a sixty-five minute record and I love every track...

JC: It's not a song about Paul Raven, it's about Raven's anger and things he felt passionately about. It's a song for Englishmen. It starts – "the raven has flown and left the tower / and Albion feels all abandoned / a desecrated cenotaph, surveillance state and waning choices / guided by warriors we knew, guided by ancestral voices". And then there is Raven's belief in the original idea of anarchy – "let flags of black and red unfurl / echoes of distant laughter / confederation of the dispossessed / fearing neither god nor master". Raven was a street guy. He believed in a confederation of like-minded individuals, so we tried to be as true to his ideas as we could. The last thing Raven said to me when he left Prague was "carpe nocturno", which is the last line. It touched me when I sang it and heard it back, and I was lost for words.

TQ: Was it a difficult song to record for all those reasons?

JC: It was a difficult song to listen back to. When you're singing, you don't think. That was my first mistake, and Conny Plank brought that to my attention. I used to think about the lyrics I was singing about, but you don't, you just switch off. The heart has to take over.

TQ: Was there any discussion about the song beforehand?

JC: No, no. It started like this – we were in a jam session and Youth goes "Right – let's do one for Raven! Let's go!" (laughs) and it went like that!

Beijing’s urban music festivals are fun, but they’re lacking a few important elements: big open skies, overnight camping and an excuse to give up showering for a few days. Luckily, the InMusic Festival picks up the slack on those points, offering a threeday camping and music fest two-hours drive outside of Beijing in the Zhangbei grasslands near Zhangjiakou, Hebei province.

Sponsored by Beijing-based rock label Pilot Records and Chinese music mag InMusic, this year’s line-up features local rockers spanning metal, punk, folk and indie rock, including Subs, The Face, Reflector, New Pants, Yaksa, Hanggai, Suffocated, He Yong, Shuang Zi and Second Hand Rose.

Confirmed foreign acts include US pop-rockers Panic! At The Disco (pictured), wacky, Paris-based American duo CocoRosie and British post-punks Killing Joke.

Tickets for the festival cost a very reasonable 120RMB for one day, 220RMB for two or 300RMB for all three. To get there, take the train (three hours) to Zhangjiakou and then a taxi.

The launch of a new night of live Post-Punk hedonism from the creators of Electrogogo!

Frankie D is famous as the curator and resident DJ of many long-running cult Electro nights including of course the iconic Electrogogo, which packed in the crowds at Madame Jojo's, to which he returns with his brand new live music night Warm Leatherette, featuring a host of Post-Punk and Electro bands and DJs.

The opening night has as its theme an homage to the legendary Killing Joke, and celebrates all things electronic, synth, gothic and alternative. Three of the bands have a Killing Joke connection: opening act Tribazik have supported Killing Joke several times and their debut album features vocals from Killing Joke's Jaz Coleman. Inertia are joined by Killing Joke's keyboard player Reza; and finally, topping the bill is legendary Killing Joke bassist Youth's side project, the fantastic turbo-charged Vertical Smile.

‘Absolute Dissent’ will be released on a number on formats, including double coloured vinyl and a Deluxe 2-CD package; the latter will feature a bonus disc showcasing Killing Joke cover versions from bands such as Metallica, Helmet & Spinefarm labelmates Dead By April, whose version of ‘Love Like Blood’ was recently released as a digital single.

you did not miss this release. it never came out. for some unknown reason (at this time), Spinefarm decided not to go with the Industrial Suicide Tribe E.P. Instead, they went with the In Excelsis E.P., which contains all the tracks that would have been on IST except IST itself, and it adds Kali Yuga and a remix of the Ghost of Ladbroke Grove. but wait, there's a hitch-- the did not release it in the U.S.! even the download sites refuse to sell it to U.S. fans! I am hoping this is not a sign of things to come because it has already been too long waiting for the 13th studio album (Feast of Fools or Absolute Dissent or... it changes weekly). Spinefarm does NOTHING to help clarify the issue. They've released nothing regarding the deleted E.P. and nothing regarding the U.S. release (or lack thereof) and they don't respond to emails either.

Oh, and the iTunes version of In Excelsis was meant to come with a film by Youth with a soundtrack which was going to be an unreleased Killing Joke song (possibly a remix of IST), but there is no sign of this film/soundtrack anywhere. And, guess what? Spinefarm has not commented on that either!

Drummer Martin Atkins, who traveled across Europe with Popa during the 1990/1991 KILLING JOKE tour and later worked with him in the early years of PIGFACE (as documented on the 1991 live album, “Welcome To Mexico…Asshole”), praises Popa’s contributions to the world of underground music – as well as his one-of-a-kind personality.

“Lee is one of those people you want to have with you on the road when the shit hits the fan,” Atkins says. “[He’s also] one of those special people who occasionally cause some of the shit, but you’re all in it together and you have his back for all of the times he’s had yours. He’s one of those very rare, no-bullshit, tell-it-like-it-is Chicago fuckheads… one of those people you want.”

Author and musician Joel Gausten (PIGFACE/ ELECTRIC FRANKENSTEIN/ EFFECTIONHATE), who first crossed paths with Popa in 2006 while conducting research for a KILLING JOKE-related project, echoes Atkins’ sentiments.

“Lee Popa is one of the most open, helpful and brutally honest people I’ve ever encountered in the music business,” Gausten says. “He’s also one hell of a storyteller – even though I’ll have to take most of what he’s told me about certain bands to my grave! Lee is a rare friend to many in an industry full of charlatans and creeps, and he deserves much better than these unfortunate circumstances.”

We recorded Sticks and Stones and a new song I wrote called 'Human Nature' which I am crazily excited for you all to hear!!! PAUL RAVEN Memorial Concert Planned In April - Mar. 20, 2008

Saturday, April 12 will see a special gig at he Bridge House 2 in London remembering with fondness Paul Raven, bassist from KILLING JOKE, MINISTRY, PRONG, etc., who died in October of last year.

The special lineup features three bands that all have a close association with Paul — and none more so than GUNDOGS, who feature Paul's brother Dan on bass. Dan said of the event, "I hope that this show and the love that underpins its spirit, will be loud enough to reach Paul at the right hand of God. He would be proud to see so many of his great friends come together in this way."

Also featuring on the bill are OCTOBER FILE, who many will have seen on recent KILLING JOKE tours, and HEADCOUNT, who had their 2004 album "Die Monkey Die" produced by Paul.

HEADCOUNT singer Rob Moss said of Paul, "What better way to remember Paul than an evening of floor to floor rock n roll. He'd have been first up there, kicking it up!" Steve Beatty of OCTOBER FILE added, "We shall endeavor to honour and salute Paul as best and as fitting as we can. We hope he is attending in spirit."
