On October 31st, 2007 at 3pm in the South Eastern French city of Annecy, which lies approximately 30 kms from Geneva Airport, there will be a service in the memory of the now truly larger than life, Mister Paul Vincent Raven. The fact that this service falls on the same day as Halloween, while appropriate, is simply a coincidence. No costume will be required.

The family understands that the location of this first service (there will be others) will, for many of you, be prohibitive but would like to assure those loved ones and friends that are able to attend that they are very welcome.

We intend to organise a wake at L'Usine ( the factory) in Geneva on the evening of the 31st. This is the club where Paul enjoyed his last night on earth.

"It deeply saddens me to tell you that legendary bass player and friend Paul Raven died yesterday morning of a heart failure in Geneva Switzerland at around 6am . Paul and myself were invited to play on the new Treponem Pal album in Geneva for a week.After a long day of recording the band went out for drinks to celebrate Paul..s arrival and reminisce .We then went back to the house we were staying and I went to bed the other guys stayed up . I found Raven a sleep in a chair the next morning in the living room.I thought nothing of it as Raven would sleep like this on the tour bus in the front lounge all the time.Then I looked closer at him and he looked very grey .I checked his pulse and there was none.I yelled for the other guys in the band .We immediately did some CPR and called for an ambulance .Medics arrived quickly but after an hour of trying to get his heart beat back they could not save him. They said he died in his sleep probably around 6 a.m. it was then 9:30 a.m. Marco and myself have been contacting his family all day yesterday.I..m assuming a funeral service will be held in Wolverhampton U.K. where his family live and his birth place. We made a lot of great music together. Words cant describe how I feel right now I..m devastated.He will be missed by many.He was the king of the one liners. I apologise for the impersonal nature of this email, but I have the information regarding the death of my beloved brother, Paul Vincent Raven.

First of all, after many days, the French authorities have performed an autopsy and informed me and those loved ones of Paul..s that have been alongside me in France, that he died of natural causes. I wish this were not the only piece of ..good..news to have been received on this awful day.

Due to much confusion and a set of circumstances too complicated to lay down here, we find we are unable to repatriate Paul..s body to his native England in the way we would have wished, and still retain his dignity. A cremation and a service in Paul..s memory will be held in the city of Annecy in SE France in the early part of next week. I cannot, at this stage, be more specific. The nearest airport to Annecy, by some margin, is Geneva. Further services, gatherings and remembrances will occur elsewhere in Paul..s world at a later date.
More information will come your way as we discover it. (times, dates, hotel numbers, etc.)

Please forward this email or the limited information it contains, to those friends of your..s and Paul..s who you think will need it.

I write this in the presence of Paul..s partner, Melinda, her sisters Melissa and Jennifer and Mr. Marco Neves. These are people without whom I could not have made it through this dreadful week. I love them very much and would like to thank them for everything they have done at this time.

Saturday, October 20, 2007 - The 13th Planet family is saddened to confirm the devastating news of the sudden and unexpected death of Ministry's bassist, Paul Raven. Raven was working with French recording artists Treponem Pal on their new collaboration with Ted Parsons (ex-Prong/ex-Killing Joke/Jesu) and members of The Young Gods in a small village on the French/Swiss border. Initial reports indicate Raven's passing was the result of a heart attack.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Raven's family and friends around the world. His love of life, artistic creations and joyful laughter touched and moved all of us deeply. The loss of this extraordinary artist, unique individual and loyal friend will be felt by many. The impact of his talents will be remembered forever but his contribution to the lives of everyone who knew him is his greatest legacy.

Paul Raven was found dead yesterday from an apparent heart attack at his home in the Swiss border town of Geneva. He was 46. Raven played bass for Ministry, Prong, Society 1, Killing Joke, Godflesh along with his new band Mob Research.

"Paul Raven was the most stand up guy I ever had the pleasure to work with" stated Society 1 frontman Matt Zane. "The thing about Raven is that after working together he made an effort in the following years to stay in touch even if it was just to drop you a quick message to let you know he was keeping an eye on you. That was the coolest thing about him. He respected you and made it a point to let you know that. With everything he has done with his career he didn't have to stay in contact or even admit his involvement with me and my band but that's what separated him in my eyes from all the other musicians I've had dealings with over the years. I have the greatest respect for him. A great musician and a great person. I will truly miss him."

Paul Raven played bass on Society 1's "Exit Through Fear" and did a brief tour with the band in support of the album.

I was on the MasturbaTour 2006 with Ministry and the Revolting Cocks for the California dates. Every time I saw Raven, I would at first feel intimidated, then feel his warmth and want to just melt into him. He was genuine, a gentleman and a bad ass. I was amazed by him, how much he gave, how much he put out. Al Jourgensen usually brings in really incredible people on his tour, and Raven was no exception - talent and personality-wise. I am very fortunate to have that time with that crew, and became very fond of Raven, especially his relentless MySpace bulletins. I miss him.

horrible sad sad news about our bandmate (ugh three bands!) Paul Raven - i've just kept saying what an amzing bass player he was - not worried about technique - just playing with a quarter.....and changing his strings whenever he remembered.......he contributed all kinds of graphics too - he did the welcome to mexico shirt for us and designed the cover for Killing Jokes Extremeties........its helpful to think that our dna is mixed together on that album - and we fucking rocked - but sad to know that it wont be mixed again.

R.I.P PAUL VINCENT RAVEN

The body of Paul Raven — who played bass for seminal post-punk/ industrial outfit Killing Joke before later working with Ministry, Prong, Godflesh and most recently Mob Research with Mark Gemini Thwaite — was discovered Saturday 20th October in a home in Geneva, Switzerland. Early indications are that Paul, 46, died of a heart attack whilst asleep.

Raven was in Geneva working with French industrial band Treponem Pal, who are reuniting for a new album with singer Marco Neves and Prong/Jesu drummer Ted Parsons. Raven was to return to the USA a week later to continue work on the Mob Research debut album 'Holy City Zoo'. Paul was a great friend to Mark and Mission founder Wayne Hussey and a legendary bass player. We shall all miss Paul incredibly. Our condolences go to Paul's family and friends at this time.

Wayne Hussey: "Raven was one of the good guys. He became a good friend of Mick Brown first and then gradually I got to know him and we got on very well. He was always encouraging, loved music, talking about it and playing it. The last time I heard from him was a month or so ago. Ironically he emailed me to tell me that it was 'a very nice thing to do to post a news message on MWIS about the death of a fan (Ashira)'. He also went onto say that he loved the idea of the Shepherds Bush shows and was gonna try to get to at least one or two of them. I shall miss him. I liked him a lot."

Mark Gemini Thwaite: "Although I'd known Paul for nearly 20 years, I had really gotten much closer to him as we started work on Mob Research earlier this year. He was so excited about the future of the band and we hoped to have the record out by Spring 2008.. His enthusiam and determination to make things happen was infectious and I shall miss him greatly. His sense of humour was priceless and, both hailing from the same part of the midlands in England, we shared many a brummie and black country joke together.. His last words to me - just a couple of days before he died - were 'Stay Positive'. That says it all about Paul.. the rock world has lost one of its most shining sons, may he have gone to a better place".

Mourning Paul

There was a moment just before the massive wave of sadness that I smiled. In that split second I was happy and proud that even in death Paul Raven went out on his own terms in a very rockstar fashion. A village in France...?? I am sure he is pleased, perhaps not with the timing but with the scene. I know those of us left behind are mourning the loss of a unique and wonderful human being. A character whose larger than life personality captivated us all. I was introduced to Paul Raven via a phone conversation regarding the lyrics to a Killing Joke song "psyche" back when we recorded the song for our first EP "purge". Paul was the bass player in KJ and I thought he might be able to help me with a few of the lyrics. We were friends from that point forward.
Everything I ever did with Paul was an adventure, and we went on plenty.I never would have survived LA if it wasn't for him. He made an insane city seem fun and exciting.
I don't know what to say or how to say it. I am going to miss my friend.

The expression 'one of a kind' has lost its value but my beautiful brother, Paul Vincent Raven, redefined it. I found out this morning that my old friend Paul Raven died yesterday. I first met Raven about 15 years ago and I was immediately in awe of his presence, not only from what he has done musically but he just had that something special about him, it didn’t hurt that he was a big guy and when he walked into a place, you and everyone else knew it. He was a rock -n- roller from heart to soul and lived it though and though, often outshining the front men he stood behind…. It was at Matt Green from Spahn Ranch’s house and they were working on something, banging on keyboards and making noise. He was incredibly warm, incredibly friendly and when he shook my hand he looked into my eyes. Something you don’t see very often in music let alone in the heart of Hollywood.

It had been about 8 years since I had last seen him in person when he arrived at my studio last year to record bass on the new album and I was met with that same awe, he was a big presence who immediately grabbed me and pulled me into a bear hug. Raven had moved up to Portland (so have I), which gave us a chance to hang out here and there. It was only a week or so ago that we had made plans to get together and listen to some new stuff he was working on and to talk about doing some more work together. I am in shock. I don’t even really know what to say or how to say it. Never forget how precious life is. Things can change in an instant. It’s at moments like this that we are reminded how important little things are and how the people in our lives can mean so much without us even knowing it. My deepest condolences to Raven’s band-mates, family, friends and fans. We will all miss him.

Ministry/Killing Joke bassist Paul Raven passed away today Saturday 20th october, apparently from a heart attack. The cause of the attack is currently unknown. He had just arrived in Europe to commence recording with his friends Treponem Pal in Geneva.

Raven was the bass player for Killing Joke for many years, also Prong and most recently Ministry and his new project Mob Research with Mission guitarist Mark Gemini Thwaite. Paul Raven Bass player with Killing Joke has died unexpectedly in Geneva in the early hours of Saturday October 20th 2007.

Paul had been recording with Ted Parsons and Marco Neves in Geneva for the band Treponem pal. After a days recording Paul retired to bed and did not wake up.

Although Killing Joke was his life passion playing on hits such as Love Like Blood and Kings and Queens, Paul was also a prolific musician in other areas. At various times in his life he played and wrote with Ministry, Godflesh, Prong, Pigface, Murder Inc, Amen and many others. Killing Joke have been covered by everyone from Metallica, Foo Fighters, Fear factory, Helmet to Nouvelle Vague and LCD Soundsystem. Paul a native of Wolverhampton started his musical journey with local punk legends The Neon Hearts and then Kitsch which he formed with Tyla later of Dogs D'Amour.

Paul Raven was found dead in his home in France yesterday. The result of an apparent heart attack, he was working with Ted Parsons on a new Treponem Pal release.

Many of you know Raven from his work with Prong or Killing Joke among other artists. However, he worked with Justin Broadrick on the final Godflesh record in 2001. Condolences to his family and friends.

The body of Paul Raven — who played bass for seminal post-punk/ industrial outfit Killing Joke before later working with Ministry, Prong and Godflesh — was discovered Saturday in a home in Geneva, Switzerland, according to Ministry's publicist. Early indications are that Raven, 46, died of a heart attack.

Raven was in Geneva working with French industrial band Treponem Pal, who are reuniting for a new album with singer Marco Neves, Prong/Jesu drummer Ted Parsons and members of the Young Gods.

Raven's body was apparently discovered by Parsons, according to a post on the drummer's MySpace page. He said he went out drinking with Raven and the rest of the collaborators the night before Raven's body was found.

"I found Raven asleep in a chair the next morning in [a] living room," he explained. "I thought nothing of it, as Raven would sleep like this on the tour bus in the front lounge all the time. Then I looked closer at him, and he looked very gray. I checked his pulse and there was none. I yelled for the other guys in the band. We immediately did some CPR and called for an ambulance. Medics arrived quickly, but after an hour of trying to get his heartbeat back, they could not save him. They said he died in his sleep, probably around 6 a.m. It was then 9:30 a.m. Words can't describe how I feel right now. I'm devastated. He will be missed by many."

Parsons added the news of Raven's death "deeply saddens" him and that they were to be in Geneva for a week working on the Treponem Pal record.

Ministry's Al Jourgensen expressed shock at Raven's passing. "The world of music is a sadder, emptier place," he wrote in a statement. "Not only was Raven an extraordinary talent, but one of my closest, dearest friends. Our condolences and prayers go to his immediate family. He will be truly missed by artists, musicians and his fans the world over."

Raven made a name for himself with his work with Killing Joke, which he joined in 1982, replacing original bassist Youth. He recorded and toured with the band as it achieved some commercial success, lending his talents to 1983's Fire Dances, 1985's Night Time and 1986's Brighter Than a Thousand Suns. He left the band during the recording of 1988's Outside the Gate but later rejoined the fold for 1990's Extremities, Dirt & Various Repressed Emotions.

When Killing Joke called it quits in 1991, Raven and his bandmates — save frontman Jaz Coleman — went on to form Murder, Inc., adding singer Chris Connelly to the mix. Raven also participated in Pigface, a project conceived by Murder Inc./ Killing Joke/ Public Image Ltd. drummer Martin Atkins, and later joined Prong for 1994's Cleansing and 1996's Rude Awakening.

He then rejoined Killing Joke for the band's 2003 eponymous effort and its 2006 follow-up, Hosannas From the Basements of Hell. Raven began working with Jourgensen and Ministry in 2005, eventually appearing on 2006's Rio Grande Blood and this year's The Last Sucker. Raven's most recent work was with Mob Research, a band featuring members of Warrior Soul and the Mission UK. Its debut LP is expected to hit stores next year.

Drummer Ted Parsons (PRONG, SWANS, GODFLESH, JESU) — who has spent the past few days in a Swiss studio collaborating with French recording artists TREPONEM PAL on their new release — has released the following statement regarding legendary bassist Paul Raven's (MINISTRY, KILLING JOKE) passing:

"It deeply saddens me to tell you that legendary bass player and friend Paul Raven died yesterday morning of a heart failure in Geneva, Switzerland at around 6:00 a.m.

"Paul and myself were invited to play on the new TREPONEM PAL album in Geneva for a week. After a long day of recording, the band went out for drinks to celebrate Paul's arrival and reminisce. We then went back to the house we were staying and I went to bed the other guys stayed up.

"I found Raven asleep in a chair the next morning in the living room. I thought nothing of it as Raven would sleep like this on the tour bus in the front lounge all the time. Then I looked closer at him and he looked very gray. I checked his pulse and there was none. I yelled for the other guys in the band. We immediately did some CPR and called for an ambulance. Paul Raven, a former bass player for Ministry and Killing Joke, has been found dead, the victim of an apparent heart attack.

Raven had recently arrived in Europe to record his friends Treponem Pal.

Doctors are yet to release an official cause of death for the 46 year old bassist.

Raven joined Killing Joke in mid 1982 and remained in the band through their heyday until they broke up in 1991.

Next stop for Raven was metal band Prong. He performed on their albums 'Cleansing' and 'Rude Awakening'.

In 2003, he returned to Killing Joke for their reunion album and in 2005, moved onto Ministry. He features on the Ministry album 'Rio Grande Blood', as well as the final Ministry album 'The Last Sucker'.

Treponem Pal is a French industrial metal band. Raven was to be the featured bass player for their new album.

Raven RIP

Today I found out that my good friend Paul Raven passed away early this morning.

Paul was a very amazing man, who I loved and trusted very much. He always had great ideas, ventures and always looked out for me, as if I were a little brother to him.

I was very fortunate to be in contact with him several times in his last week and I had great conversations with him, we laughed and joked, which was an integral part of his personality.

We had so much more to do, especially with his own personal project Mob Research, which I know he was extremely excited about.

I don't know what more to say, as this is such an unexpected happening for me, as we were only talking a short time ago.. I can't believe he is gone.

Paul will be greatly missed by music fans, friends and mostly his family; his bands will miss him terribly.. He was a great man and a unique bass player who has died at such a tragically early age.

Love to you brother.. I miss you.
